Music exerts a fascination of sorts over Thomas Hauert. For this choreographer, music is not a constraint but an inexhaustible wellspring of dialogue with movement. For him, dance and music are the incarnation of our desire to order our experience of time. This new work for six dancers takes on the Concerto en fa by George Gershwin and Ludus de Morte Regis by contemporary composer Mauro Lanza, here performed a capella. Two pieces of music to which the performers improvise according to a strict framework, subverting the cinematographic principle of “mickey mousing”, which holds that the music should mimic the action. The result is a captivating moving web that lends a visible physicality to the musical experience.
In 1998, Thomas Hauert, a longstanding member of the Belgian contemporary dance mouvement, decided to go alone, setting up his own company, ZOO. His first production, Cows in Space, was acclaimed for its unique use of improvisation, and laid the foundations for an aesthetic that explores the tension between freedom and constraint, individuals and the group, order and disorder. The Swiss choreographer has since gone on to create over 15 works which have been performed in more than 30 countries. In 2013, he joined La Manufacture (Lausanne) as academic director of the contemporary dance bachelor degree programme.
