Speechless Voices

Cie Greffe/Cindy Van Acker

How can we use the body to pay tribute? And to imbue this language with the space necessary to re-connect with another, be they an audience member or one who is no longer with us? Inspired by the paintings of Belgian painter Michaël Borremans, Cindy Van Acker once again ardently throws «her body into battle». The core elements of her choreography – slowness, geometry and abstraction – are this time laced with the figurative, through breathtaking images.

An imposing chandelier hangs in an immaculate space as six surviving solitary and statuesque bodies seek to ritualise absence and solitude, presence and connection. Combining sensitivity and intransigence in three tableaux - the wounds, the light and the pulsating rhythms - «Speechless Voices» is a choreographic poem that pays tribute to friend and composer Mika Vainio. An evocation of the shock waves and pain, this very graphic narrative unfolds to music composed by the late musician.

Cindy Van Acker has explored for many years the human body’s vast potential. Her meticulous compositions, which combine minimalist movement, slowness, geometry and electronic music are conceived within a singular context, in which the body, the light, the sound and the space are all treated in a fusional manner. She founded the Compagnie Greffe in 2002 in Geneva, with the creation of «Corps 00:00», a solo that would earn her international recognition. Her last solo «Knusa» was created within the context of the photographic project «Insert» by Christian Lutz and was chosen for the Swiss selection at the Avignon Festival 2018.  Since 2017 Cindy Van Acker has also been an associated artist and programmer for the ADC in Geneva.
